Deco Design Studio specializes in architectural interiors such as independent kitchen design, built-in furniture and lighting and bathroom interiors.
As her first name indicates, Yoko was born and raised in Japan. However, she has lived and worked in the U.S. and Europe. Yoko has an excellent understanding of peoples, cultures, histories and diverse ways of living. She studied architecture, holds architect’s licenses in Japan and Germany, and worked with many architects, engineers, the U.S. Department of State, its embassies, international schools and other organizations in Japan, Germany, Austria and Italy, as well as in the U.S.
In the past several years Yoko’s interest has been residential interiors and the concept of the great room with integrated kitchen in particular. Her works have won design awards and were published in magazines (Great American Kitchens, Kitchen Trend). A clever use of light in a shower was recognized by the Home and Garden Television Network. Yoko is a sophisticated and creative architect who brings an international flair and insight to her design projects because of her extensive work abroad. She designed the remodeling of our kitchen and bathroom. She was always patient, attentive to our ideas and always worked with us to translate them from blueprints to the finished room, guiding us through the most difficult moments of the renovations. We feel very lucky to have worked with her (we still do on other projects) and to have her as a friend as well.

Yoko Barsky has been phenomenal throughout every design/renovation/home project that I have undertaken with her. Yoko’s extraordinary talent lies in her creativity, ability to think outside the box, and unusual ability to listen to her client. She is tireless in executing her projects, and meticulous in every detail. What has been most exciting is her interest in collaborating with her customers and integrating new ideas into spaces that retain some of the client’s original possessions. Yoko seems to naturally understand her clients’ needs and she gently guides to them to cutting edge design, never beyond that which is comfortable for them. Working with Yoko over the past five years has enriched not only my home but also me as a person. (Also see Builtins and Lighting #2 and #6)

This kitchen is the heart of our home. We wanted a space that was warm and inviting, clean and contemporary, and a real working kitchen. Yoko made all that happen, with innovative touches that we could never imagined on our own —a bar height counter becomes a work station for our six-foot two cook and a breakfast bar which becomes a baking center and homework space. We did all this and more in a small alley-wide kitchen. We’re thrilled with the results and wouldn’t change a thing.

Yoko Barsky designed a wonderful kitchen for us! Working within a number of constraints, Yoko made our space work marvelously for cooking and entertaining, both functionally and visually. She went way beyond our expectations, not only in design but also advising on cabinet design and appliance selection, assuring that the construction met her high standards of qualities, and helping with myriad details. We cannot imagine a designer who adds more value than Yoko.
